When to Consult a Urologist

A consultation is recommended in cases of:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Frequent urination or nocturia (urinating at night)
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Kidney or bladder stones
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Prostate enlargement or prostatitis
  • Incontinence or difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Male infertility or erectile dysfunction

How to Prepare for a Urological Examination

To ensure an accurate assessment:

  1. Bring previous ultrasound, CT, or lab results (urine tests, PSA levels).
  2. Describe your symptoms in detail, onset, frequency, and severity.
  3. Note any medications or supplements you are currently taking.
  4. For men, provide information about previous prostate tests or urological procedures.
  5. Drink enough water before the appointment if a urine sample or bladder ultrasound is required.

What to Expect During the Examination

The consultation begins with a medical history review (anamnesis) and discussion of symptoms.
This is followed by a physical examination, which may include abdominal palpation, prostate examination, or ultrasound of the urinary tract.

If needed, the urologist may recommend further testing such as urine analysis, uroflowmetry, cystoscopy, or imaging studies.
After evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is developed, which may include medications, minimally invasive procedures, or surgical interventions depending on the condition.
