What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system, the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

A gastroenterologist manages conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, acid reflux (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis, hepatitis, gallstones, pancreatitis, and various digestive disorders.

When should you consult a gastroenterologist?

A consultation is recommended in cases of:

  • Abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort
  • Heartburn, acid reflux, or burning sensation in the chest
  • Changes in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, blood in the stool
  • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea, vomiting, or feeling overly full after small meals
  • Jaundice or suspected liver issues
  • Family history of colorectal cancer or digestive diseases

How to prepare for a gastroenterology appointment?

To ensure the most accurate assessment:

  1. Bring previous medical tests, ultrasound, endoscopy (gastroscopy/colonoscopy), blood work, liver panel results.
  2. Write down your symptoms, when they occur, what triggers them, and their duration.
  3. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol for at least 12 hours prior if an abdominal ultrasound is expected.
  4. Prepare a list of medications and supplements you are taking.
  5. Bring any older test results (within the last 6-12 months) for comparison.

What happens during the appointment?

Your consultation begins with a detailed medical history, including symptoms, dietary habits, and previous conditions. This is followed by a physical examination, including abdominal palpation and assessment of digestive function.
If necessary, the gastroenterologist may recommend:

  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Endoscopic procedures, gastroscopy, colonoscopy
  • Laboratory tests for liver enzymes, pancreatic markers, inflammation, food intolerances

Based on all findings, the doctor will create an individualized treatment plan, which may include medication, dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, and follow-up testing.
