When should you see a breast specialist?

A check-up is recommended if you notice:

• A lump in the breast or the armpit
• Breast pain that does not go away
• A change in the shape or the skin of the breast, an inverted nipple or discharge
• A family history of breast or ovarian cancer

A yearly preventive check-up is a good idea even without complaints.

How to prepare

• Bring previous breast ultrasounds, mammograms and test results.
• If you have periods, the best time for the check-up is between day 5 and day 12 of your cycle.

What happens during the appointment?

The doctor asks about your symptoms and family history, examines the breasts and armpits and performs a breast ultrasound. If needed, they order a mammogram or other tests and discuss the next steps with you.
